Nickelback’s Post-grudge Commercial Appeal
Wednesday, October 27th, 2010Nickelback is a grunge/hard rock band formed in western Canada in 1995. The band is comprised of Chad Kroeger (lead singer and guitarist), Ryan Peake (guitarist), Mike Kroeger (bass guitarist), and Daniel Adair (drummer). While the majority of the band’s members come from Hanna, Alberta, they are now based in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Lead singer and guitarist Chad Kroeger’s voice has become the trademark of Nickelback’s sound. The band has been criticized for selling out due to the popularity of their songs on the radio. They still maintain a large fan base across the world. The band got its name from the nickel in change Mike Kroeger almost always had to give back to the customers at his previous job at a Starbucks. Each time he would give a customer a nickel in change he would say, “Here’s your nickel back.”
The band’s first demo album, Hesher, was released in February 1996. The name stems from the band’s response when asked whether they would be willing to record a demo, to which Nickelback replied “hey, sure.” Later that year, the band would release their first full-length album, Curb, which would grow a solid cult following. The band re-released the album on June 25, 2002. On March 7, 2000, the band would release their second full-length album, The State, which would peak at #11 on Canadian music charts and #130 on U.S. charts.
On September 11, 2001, Nickelback released their third album, Silver Side Up. The album, which includes hit singles, “How You Remind Me,” “Never Again,” and “Too Bad,” debuted at #1 on Canadian and U.K. album charts and placed second on U.S. charts. Both “How You Remind Me” and “Too Bad” would achieve #1 status on the U.S. Modern Rock chart, with the former even claiming the #1 spot on the U.S. Hot 100 for four weeks. The album, easily their most commercially successful album, would go on to sell an estimated six million records.
Two years later in the fall of 2003, the band would release their fourth album, The Long Road, which would debut at the #1 and #6 spots on Canadian and U.S. album charts, respectively. The album’s hit singles include: “Someday,” “Figured You Out,” “Feelin’ Way Too Damn Good,” and “Because of You.” The album, like its predecessor, would go platinum in the U.S. On October 4, 2005, Nickelback released their fifth album, All the Right Reasons, which would debut at the top of both Canadian and U.S. album charts. The album, which includes hit singles, “Photograph,” “Far Away,” “Animals,” and “Savin’ Me,” would also go on to achieve platinum status. In 2006, Nickelback was the main draw for the support act for Bon Jovi’s “Have a Nice Day Tour”.
