Wow, the same uniforms, banners and flags and roll off for 28 years O___O
“Wait. . . . a high school?” -Yep.
Fun to see, and to realize that the “marching graph paper” moniker still applies. That description is at least as old as 1975. – french horn, class of ’77
Pretty simple. . Phasing? Out of Step Aux team through entire march? Wrong notes by the clarinet section? Now do you remember? Oh- Yes trumpet 1 played wrong partial on trio. . . any other questions?
I think everyone is just stating the obvious. . . . from this incredible. . . sending chills down your spine performance and Magnolia’s vid of the same day people are STUNNED that Arcadia lost. Magnolia held their own, but Arcadia is a legend. . . and that’s real talk.
Current theories suggest the involvement of mobs, a Vegas bet, a thanksgiving dinner gone bad, Diane who works at Target and the development of the MTV series, The Hills. In other words. . . its a mystery.
Sound is really unrefined and out of tune. Its why they didnt win music that year. They always marched well. Its everything else. Magnolia went undefeated that year on the street and had to use everyone in their band. This band used less than half and upperclassmen and still lost to a band from C class. That is what makes what they did amazing. They took 150 on the field and and competed with 300. Dont take away from the hard work that band did.
Do you have the Magnolia performance at this angle?
AHS class of ’01 and still playing. I remember Mr. Landes used to show us this video as inspiration the week of Chino. He always played it twice. The first time without sound so we could watch the feet, ranks, and diaganols. And the second with the music. It just blew my mind every time I watched it and we always brought our A game even after our 11 year sweeps streak got snapped by Mt. Carmel(booo). I am so proud to have been a part of this great band. They’re still keeping our tradition alive.
I remember we had to play the march twice because it was too short, and didn’t get us out of the competition area before it was over. It would be great to see a video of 1981. I believe they played Rifle Regiment, or even 1982 to hear the modified Stars and Stripes arrangement.
Thanks for posting this. It brings back a lot of memories. I was in the ranks there somewhere!
Wow seeing some of the responses to this video is like woah. A 197 out of 200 makes me feel really smallI am a member of the Thunderbird Marching Regiment in Yucaipa CA. i feel small cuz we’re only a 2A band. What’s cool about this video is the drum major is my friends dad. =] msg me and tell me ur scores =]
How on earth did Magnolia beat them?
Thanks for posting this, baribigbird! This is a real nostalgia trip–the late great Long Beach band review. Not to mention the “marching graph paper” and huge sound of the Arcadia Apache Marching Band.
THIS is what parade band is all about. Parade haters take note. It CAN, and does, get exciting
holy crap. . . now i see why my section leader tells me to watch this. . cuz its freakin good. . . o yea we almost got a perfect score at mt carmel last week. we got a 197 out of 200. its like almost 1982 all over again but 2008 style hehehe
Great to hear someone still remembers antelope valley from those days! I played trumpet with antelope valley back then(class of 80),and have fond memories of all those bands. We even took out sweepstakes at All Western 2 years in a row,I think it was ’78 & ’79 ! So, as amazing as Arcadia is – they are beatable!!!
Wow, the marching is amazing – did they get a perfect score? The sound is great too – Magnolia probably paid someone off again. . .
I am sorry, but I don’t know the woman’s name because I didn’t think to ask her, but if I run into again, I sure will. I was walking out of the concert when I noticed her twin boys, and made a comment how cute they were(they were both asleep with their dad), and asked here what she thought about the concert. And she mentioned that she played the flute in the AHS band in 1982, and that her daughter is a freshman and is also playing the flute in the band. She is a caucasian. I am asian.
yup. TJ was what folks called me in high school
P. Taylor Baritone , who are you? You must have been a T-Bone if you marched front rank.
surplusagent. . . who are you? I to was there from ’81 to ’83.
what was the lady’s name you met? i was in the front rank of the band in this video and am curious who you met.
On Apr 3,2008, we had the Arcadia HS Spring Concert at AHS’ North Gym, and I met a woman who was played a flute in the 1982 AHS band. Her daughter is a freshman in the AHS Apache band, under that same teacher Tom Landes.
I think Los Altos had the biggest band in those days. Now pound for pound, I guess that might be a different story
